Setien blasts Barcelona players for senseless passing in Valencia defeat

Quique Setien was left disappointed after suffering his first defeat as Barcelona head coach at Mestalla on Saturday afternoon.

"But then unfortunately we weren't able to get the goal and then they scored the second on the counter and then it was really hard". There are things that we didn't really understand - perhaps I didn't explain them properly to the players. It's possible that we haven't conveyed the concepts as clearly as possible or things need to be understood in a different way.

The visitors were quick to gain a stranglehold on possession but were nearly non-existent as an attacking force in the first half, with Valencia enjoying the better of the early chances.

Quique Setien got his Barcelona reign off to a positive start as Lionel Messi's solitary strike secured a 1-0 win over Granada last weekend.

Maxi Gomez stepped up to the spot, but he was denied by Marc-Andre ter Stegen who pulled off an excellent save.

"We have to evaluate a lot of things from the first half".

Alba's own goal opened the scoring in the 48th minute and Uruguayan global Gomez sealed the points in the 77th.

Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets added: 'Despite the defeat we played a good second half, creating chances and having control.

"We improved a little bit in the second half and we could have got back in the game, but that's not good enough for us".

"It was not an attitude problem".

"We weren't positioned well, we didn't have that precision, that ability to wait". But we did not resign, two years ago we played Real Madrid in a double game and now it is more complicated.

The Catalans, therefore, will have two home games in a week, with Levante in town on Sunday for a La Liga fixture.
