Second US case of coronavirus confirmed in Chicago

Many cities, including Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus, have also been placed under indefinite emergency travel restrictions.

Wuhan, a city of 11 million and the capital of central Hubei province, is in virtual lockdown.

On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed a second case of the virus in the U.S. The latest patient returned to IL from Wuhan, China January 13 and reported symptoms a few days later. However, most of the cases are in Hubei province, which is home to Wuhan.

Many events have been cancelled and a new hospital is being built in the city of Wuhan.

Chinese media outlets said the new 1,000-bed hospital could be ready within six days.

Earlier this week, a Washington man was the first diagnosed with the virus in the USA after recent travel to Wuhan.

Ten more Wuhan-linked cases were reported in other countries, including one in France that marks the first incursion of the outbreak into Europe.

"At this point we're working with CDC and we're working with our state and local partners to figure out what the risks are to people who might have been in contact with someone who was ill", Castrodale said.

A new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) was identified as the probable cause of a series of pneumonia cases by Chinese authorities on January 7.

Coronavirus has killed at least 26 people and infected over 900.

The possible case came after health officers in Los Angeles County said there were no reported coronavirus cases in L.A. county. The passenger, who was traveling with family members, will undergo a medical assessment, authorities said.


The newly-identified coronavirus has created alarm because there are still many unknowns surrounding it, such as how unsafe it is and how easily it spreads between people. But Dr. Zervos says Henry Ford, nor Wayne State where he also works, has been made aware of any extra precautions or concerns related to the virus.

Like similar viruses of this type, the new coronavirus can cause symptoms including fever, dry cough, shortness of breath and trouble breathing.

Pharmacies in Wuhan have begun to run out of supplies and hospitals have been filled with nervous members of the public.

There is no known vaccine for the novel coronavirus.

Thirty-eight people who recovered had been discharged from hospitals.

Thailand has confirmed four cases, Japan, South Korea and the United States have confirmed two cases each, while Taiwan and Singapore have reported one each.

CDC confirmed two cases among travelers returning to Washington state and IL from travels in the Wuhan region of China.

Zervos says the way doctors handle possible cases once they're confirmed, is quarantine.

Most of the deaths and overall cases have been in Hubei.
