NASA Invited Students To Choose The Name For The Mars 2020 Rover

The poll to vote on the rover's name opened Wednesday, Jan. 22 and will remain open until 11 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27.

Endurance, K-4, Oliver Jacobs of Virginia.

Vision, 5-8, Hadley Green of Mississippi.

The car-size Mars 2020 is scheduled to touch down inside the 28-mile-wide (45 kilometers) Jezero Crater in February 2021. But you'll have to act relatively fast; voting closes at midnight EST (0500 GMT) on January 28.

Nasa will be sending its next rover to Mars later this year and members of the public will help to decide what it should be called.

Fortitude, 9-12, Anthony Yoon from Oklahoma.

Tenacity, K-4, Eamon Reilly from Pennsylvania.

The 9 possible names were selected as the finalists of a student naming contest organized by NASA for school children.

Manchester United board not considering sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
United are now in fifth place in the Premier League - 33 points adrift of leaders Liverpool , who have a game in hand. And Berbatov has backed United to move for Tevez, insisting his attitude would help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

Courage, 9-12, Tori Gray of Louisiana.

Ingenuity, 9-12, Vaneeza Rupani of Alabama. Almost 4,700 eligible judge volunteers were selected from a diverse pool of educators, professionals, and space enthusiasts and were instrumental in selecting the semifinalists.

NASA's Curiosity rover, a space exploration vehicle created to move across the surface of Mars, recently experienced a temporary freeze after it became confused about its own orientation. The panel will consist of Lori Glaze, the director of NASA's Planetary Science Division in Washington, NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins, NASA-JPL rover driver Nick Wiltsie, and Clara Ma, who, as a sixth-grade student in 2009, earned the honor of naming the Mars Science Laboratory "Curiosity".

"The contest will conclude in early March, when the rover's new name - and the student behind it - are announced", NASA officials added.

Mars 2020 is part of a larger program that includes missions to the Moon as a way to prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.

NASA and an army of almost 4,700 volunteer judges have selected nine potential names for a rover that's due to be launched to Mars in July, and you have just six days to cast an online vote for your favorite name.

The winning student will be invited to watch the new rover launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
