'Get rid of her': Trump reportedly called for removal of Ukraine ambassador

News of the tape triggered a flurry of United States media headlines on Friday, offering a late twist in the Senate trial over whether to remove Mr Trump from office for the Ukraine scandal.

If the recording is authentic, it would bolster Democrats' argument that Trump associates spent almost a year trying to oust the ambassador, Marie Yovanovitch, because they saw her as an obstacle in their efforts to pressure Ukraine into investigating Trump's political rival Joe Biden.

"Although I understand, everyone understands, that I served at the pleasure of the president, I was nevertheless incredulous that the US government chose to remove an ambassador based, as far as I can tell, on unfounded and false claims by people with clearly questionable motives", Yovanovitch told a panel of House investigators in October.

However, on the recording, it is alleged that you can hear the voice of Parnas along with his partner Eli Fruman who has also been indicted, telling someone believed to be the President how the U.S. ambassador has been bad-mouthing him.

Asked for comment, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said: "Every President in our history has had the right to place people who support his agenda and his policies within his Administration". Said a voice that appeared to belong to Trump on the recording, according to ABC News, which first reported its existence on Friday. On the recording, the two tell President Trump that the US ambassador has been insulting him, which leads directly to the apparent remarks by the president. "She's basically walking around telling everybody, 'Wait, he's gonna get impeached".

The recording allegedly captured President Trump telling Giuliani associates Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman "Get her out tomorrow, I don't care, take her out okay?" Parnas and Fruman were recently indicted by the Southern District of NY on charges including conspiracy to commit campaign finance fraud.

Republicans on Friday intensified attacks on former Vice President Joe Biden in an apparent effort to shift the focus onto the Democratic presidential hopeful amid the Trump impeachment trial, one day before the president's legal team was to argue his defense on the Senate floor. Both Parnas and Fruman were ordered to turn over Ukraine-related documents to the House impeachment investigators, but refused.

"I think yesterday was very consequential, because what they've done is they've opened the door to Burisma", Cruz said, according to the transcript. They pleaded not guilty.

Parnas said Trump reacted immediately.

Parnas recently described the meeting heard in the recording in an interview with MSNBC. "I don't know how many times at that dinner, once or twice or three times, but he fired her several times at that dinner", Parnas said, speaking of Trump.

"I don't know him". Parnas has released multiple photographs showing him with not just Trump but his children and grandchildren. Don't know what he's about, don't know where he comes from, know nothing about him. Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, and acquittal is considered likely.
