European Union chiefs sign Brexit deal ahead of parliamentary vote

The presidents of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, had previously officially signed the agreement in Brussels.

Official photographs of the official signing ceremony, conducted before dawn in the European Council's headquarters in Brussels, showed chief EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier looking on.

"Things will inevitably change but our friendship will remain".

"This signature heralds a new chapter in our nation's history".

With Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel's formal endorsement, the text will now go to the European Parliament on Wednesday, January 29 for ratification.

British voters backed leaving the European Union in a June 2016 referendum, and after lengthy negotiations and several delays, Prime Minister Boris Johnson's new government plans to "get Brexit done" next week. "I'm keen to write this new page together".

This will be the last step to formalise the split on the European side, after Britain's Queen Elizabeth II gave royal assent to withdrawal legislation earlier on Thursday, capping three years of hard and complicated negotiations. During this period, the United Kingdom will be following EU rules but will not be represented in European institutions.

Following its departure, Britain will enter a transition period until December 31, 2020.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson continues to say that his government have "ample" time to reach a conclusive and coherent agreement.

There were some internal debates in the United Kingdom about what went into the end-product Brexit Deal. Johnson has repeatedly insisted that he will not extend the transition period.

After replacing Teresa May in July 2019, the Conservative party leader was required to request a third extension after British members of Parliament failed to pass a revised Brexit agreement into law.

Next measures The UK is set to depart the European Union following Friday, January 31, bringing to a conclusion 47 years as a portion of their pan-European partnership.
