Coronavirus death toll rises to 41 in China, more than 1200 sickened

Even the usual influenza that circulates each year has killed between 12,000 and 61,000 people in the United States annually since 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A virus outbreak in China has prompted seven Chinese films that were set to premiere during the holiday to postpone screenings, forgoing what is usually the best week of the year at the Chinese box office.

The vast majority of the infections and all the deaths have been in mainland China, but fresh cases are popping up.

Earlier, the charity SOS Medecins said it had treated a 48-year-old patient of Chinese origin who was showing symptoms of a fever and who said he had been in contact with people from Wuhan.

"Everyone is just trying to protect themselves", said a man in a surgical mask at a Wuhan pharmacy where customers were stocking up on masks, gloves and disinfectant.

"We originally planned to go back to my wife's hometown and bought train tickets to depart this afternoon", said Li Mengbin, who was on a stroll by the moat of the closed Forbidden City.

It said it was continuing to "closely monitor" the outbreak.

The health ministry said a South Korean man in his 50s started experiencing symptoms while working in Wuhan on January 10.

"We have published a list of 101 medical institutions with departments for high fever, as well as a guide for patients with fever in order to reduce cross infection", Lei said.

Health experts said that elderly people and those with underlying disorders should be more careful not to contract the new type of virus.
