Six killed, several injured in Germany shooting

Several people were injured in a shooting in the German town of Rot am See on Friday, according to local police. Police said that a "large operation" was underway.

A police spokesperson in nearby Aalen told AFP that "several" people were wounded and more than one killed but could not confirm reports of six people killed.

Aalen Police said that a suspect had been arrested after the shooting and there was no suggestion anyone else was involved.

Biehlmaier said the initial information suggested the suspect, a German citizen, and one or more of the victims, knew each other.

While owning firearms is not illegal in Germany, most guns can be acquired only with a licence and they are closely monitored, making mass shootings comparatively rare.

Rot am See is located some 135 km (84 miles) southeast of Frankfurt, close to the medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
