The bureau declined to comment.

But FTI, which was retained by the security consultant hired by Bezos, Gavin de Becker, said its forensic analysis pointed to former Saudi court media adviser Saud al-Qahtani, part of Prince Mohammed's inner circle.

In a response to queries citing an unidentified official, Saudi Arabia's information ministry rejected news reports on the Bezos phone breach as "wholly unsubstantiated allegations", and said it doesn't conduct or condone such illicit activities.

In it, investigators said a digital forensic review concluded with "medium to high confidence" that Bezos' phone was compromised via malware sent from a WhatsApp account used by Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The analysis reportedly found that within hours of receiving the video file, Bezos's phone saw an "unprecedented exfiltration" of 126 MB of data.

Several overseas investors in Saudi Arabia said it was too early to gauge the impact of the Bezos claims, but said they were unlikely to change their existing views on the kingdom.

"Recent media reports that suggest the Kingdom is behind hacking of Mr Jeff Bezos' phone are absurd", the Saudi Arabian embassy said on its Twitter account.

The CIA believes that Prince Mohammed ordered the killing of Khashoggi, sources told Reuters here weeks later.

In a letter of claim to the Saudi embassy in May previous year, his lawyers said: "A vast amount of Mr Almasarir's private information was stored and communicated on his iPhones ..."

When asked if U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had communicated with the Saudi crown prince or any other world leaders using WhatsApp, U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq said on Thursday: 'The senior officials at the U.N. have been instructed not to use WhatsApp, it's not supported as a secure mechanism'.

The EU's top diplomat Federica Mogherini called Saturday (20 October) for a thorough investigation into the "deeply troubling" death of Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi and full accountability for those responsible.

Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression and Agnes Callamard, Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions.

"Just as we stated when these stories first surfaced months ago, we can say unequivocally that our technology was not used in this instance". The lawsuit said that NSO Group used a vulnerability in WhatsApp, since patched, to secretly deliver its surveillance software to users.

Apple Inc. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The alleged hack deepens the intrigue around how the Enquirer - which had close links with US President Donald Trump at the time of the alleged extortion - obtained messages exchanged between Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, an ex-TV anchor who the tabloid said he was dating. "Other instant messaging companies can dream of their kind of security procedures", he said.

Such measures may be practical and worthwhile for public-facing figures like Bezos, one of the world's richest men who runs one of the world's most valuable companies and owns The Washington Post.

The suggestion of the Saudi prince's role in the hacking prompted calls for further investigation by United Nations human rights officials looking into the October 2018 killing of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist and contributor to The Washington Post, which is owned by Bezos.

Jeff Bezos had a good reason to have research done. Trump has been reluctant to condemn the Saudi prince over the Khashoggi killing and often expresses satisfaction with the Saudi government's purchases of U.S. weapons.
