At least 9 people being tested for coronavirus in Alameda County

Twenty-six people have died, including the first two deaths outside Hubei.

While restrictions have already been put in place in cities across the country to curb the outbreak, China will take stricter and more targeted measures, state television reported citing a state council, or cabinet, meeting on Friday, but gave no further details.

Officials have also closed public gathering places, such as movie theaters and internet cafes in some cities.

After a two-day meeting, the World Health Organization said Thursday that the outbreak is an emergency in mainland China but is not yet of global concern.

At least 11 cases of were found in Japan, South Korea, Thailand, the U.S., Singapore and Vietnam.

The death toll now stands at 25, with more than 800 people infected throughout China.

"If we had any other option, we'd just wait for government support (rather than issue public appeals)", said a doctor at a hospital in Wuhan, requesting anonymity.

On the eve of the Lunar New Year, one of China's most important holidays, transportation has been shut down in at least 10 cities with a total of about 33 million people.

Even the police presence, usually prominent in China, was hardly detectable.

Health care providers across North Dakota have been provided with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention information about the new coronavirus first detected in China, said a North Dakota Health Department official this week.

The ministry said it expected more imported cases because of high travel volume from China.

Some types, however, lead to more serious, sometimes deadly respiratory diseases, like severe acute respiratory syndrome or Middle East respiratory syndrome, known as SARS and MERS, respectively.

"This year we have a very scary Chinese New Year". Others have evolved into more severe illnesses, such as SARS and MERS, although so far the new virus does not appear to be almost as deadly or contagious.

The man died Wednesday but his death was not confirmed until Thursday, Hebei's health commission said. There were another 1,072 suspected cases.

"This is an emergency in China, but it has not yet become a global health emergency", WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters after two days of talks in Geneva. Most of those killed by the virus were elderly, many with pre-existing conditions, the World Health Organization said.

Wuhan is building a purpose-built hospital around a holiday complex by a lake on the outskirts of the city.

Almost all flights at Wuhan's airport had been cancelled, and airports worldwide have stepped up the screening of passengers from China.

But that all changed this week when the number of patients infected by the virus, which reportedly began in a Wuhan food market selling exotic animals for consumption, started to rapidly increase.

To discourage nationwide holiday travel, the government said beginning Friday anyone who bought a ticket for rail, air, long-distance coach, or water transport could receive a refund upon cancellation. In the capital, Beijing, major public events have been cancelled indefinitely, including traditional temple fairs that are a staple of Lunar New Year celebrations.
