First case of deadly Chinese coronavirus in US

China said on January 22 that 440 people have now contracted a new virus that first appeared in Wuhan and has killed nine people, amid fears the respiratory disease could become a global epidemic. According to news agency AFP, Australia and the Philippines are each investigating one suspected coronavirus infection.

So far six deaths have been attributed to the Wuhan coronavirus. A patient in Washington state is the first confirmed case in the USA, although indications are that the disease has already spread to other countries in Asia.

Symptoms of the virus include fever and severe coughing, but local residents shouldn't assume they've contracted coronavirus unless they've recently visited China. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that he had the coronavirus by the next day.

The outbreak began in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.Cathay said on Wednesday it had told crew they could use their discretion and choose to wear a surgical mask while operating on mainland China flights.

The new SARS-like virus that's causing an outbreak in China has now arrived in the United States, officials announced today (Jan. 21).

The virus was genomically sequenced, and researchers confirmed that it is in the same family as SARS, MERS, and the common cold.

A day earlier, a top Chinese scientist said that the coronavirus was capable of spreading from person to person, adding to fears of a broader epidemic. Officials around the world have implemented similar airport screenings in hopes of containing the virus during the busy Lunar New Year travel season. However, other symptoms include breathlessness, a sore throat, and a cough.

The new coronavirus has caused alarm for its similarity to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which killed almost 650 people across mainland China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003. Viruses can mutate into more unsafe and contagious forms, and it's too early to say what will happen with this one.

His comments came as the WHO on Wednesday scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss the virus and whether to declare a public health emergency of global concern. Those tests confirmed the virus' identity.

Viruses that can spread between humans and animals cause so-called zoonotic diseases.

So, coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are most common among animals-but sometimes, those viruses can be transmitted between animals and humans (known as zoonotic viruses). The World Health Organization has advised people to avoid "unprotected" contact with live animals and thoroughly cook meat and eggs. No one wants to be the first in the nation in these types of situations, but these are the types of situations that public health and its partners train and prepare for. This could entail setting up quarantine areas, tightening border checks, setting up special treatment centers and restricting global travel. There are about 260 cases in Wuhan, according to Chinese officials.

The World Health Organization has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday, January 22 to decide whether or not the coronavirus should be declared an worldwide public health emergency.
