One person was killed and seven others seriously wounded, one of them a child, when a gunman opened fire in a busy area of the USA city of Seattle.

Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins said there were six victims at the scene, including the person who died. Victims had gunshot wounds to the legs, chest, buttocks and abdomen. One person was found dead in a heavily trafficked area of downtown and five others were taken to a Seattle hospital, he said.

The suspect appears to have been a "lone shooter", Seattle Police Department Chief Carmen Best told reporters.

The suspects fled the scene, and authorities are now searching for them, police said.

The shooting broke out around 5 p.m. near Pike Place Market and cops were searching for multiple shooters who fled the scene, according to Seattle Police.

The Seattle Police and Fire departments did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
