Residents of China's Wuhan Banned From Leaving City Over Coronavirus Outbreak

The previously reported death toll in China was nine, all in Hubei province.

Officials in China said Wednesday that they are particularly concerned about the virus, a form of viral pneumonia, spreading as people travel for Chinese New Year celebrations, which begin on Saturday.

"The decision about whether or not to declare a public health emergency of global concern is one I take extremely seriously, and one I'm only prepared to make with appropriate consideration of all of the evidence".

World Health Organization says it is split on the decision and needs more information before making recommendations on how best to handle the virus - specifically in China where the virus originated.

It has claimed nine lives in China where officials say there are 440 confirmed cases.

Nigeria: The country's center for disease control advised travelers coming from Wuhan to report to a medical facility if they feel ill and said that surveillance has been intensified at all points of entry. "We think it is going to be handled very well", he said at Davos in Switzerland. Ten days later, China confirmed that the coronavirus was the cause.

Signs of infection with the new virus include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties.

The Chinese outbreak's origin has been connected to a now-closed large live seafood market that also sold exotic animals, leading experts to initially believe the disease infected humans through exposure to animals.

There is no vaccine for the virus.

"The other element of that is not just to watch for them but to actually respond and whether we are talking about SARS, pandemic influenza, MERS or Ebola we have had lots of opportunities to engage in these kind of responses and to learn lessons that we then incorporate into future responses", de Villa said.

Airports round the world have stepped up screening of people from China, and some flights to the affected area have been canceled.

Overseas, one case has been confirmed in Japan, three in Thailand, and one in Korea.
