Three-time major semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov suffered a 6-4 7-6 (7-6) 3-6 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (10-3) defeat against 22-year-old American Tommy Paul in a second-round match that went to a fifth-set tiebreaker.

The 38-year-old's new outfit proved a major talking point for viewers but Williams made the biggest statement with a commanding display on centre court.

Williams, a seven-time Australian Open victor, relocated right into the 3rd round for the 18 th time in her occupation with a 6-2 6-3 triumph over Slovenia's Zidansek.

Williams stayed on track for a 24-hour Grand Slam singles crown that matched the record after sending Tamara Zidansek at his first career meeting. Soon he will play against Sam Querrey in a completely American confrontation.

But Williams, who gave her US$43,000 Auckland winners' cheque to a bushfire relief fund last week, said she felt no particular problem in her opening victory against Russian teenager Anastasia Potapova. Potapova improved in the second set and even broke for a 2-1 lead before Williams responded.

The sixth game of the set proved pivotal, with Zidansek missing out on three break-point chances before just her fourth unforced error of the set gave Williams a game point that she finally converted, eliciting a shriek of "Come on!".

Roger Federer and Serena Williams produced textbook impressions during the night session at the Rod Laver Arena to advance to the third round of the Australian Open on Wednesday.

"I think I'll be less nervous this time", said Gauff, who eliminated seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams in the first round Monday.

"I hadn't been able to win as a mum, it was nice to be able to win a tournament with a two-year-old".

"That's been really good to see that the Australian Open take that stance on that", she said.

A week after claiming her first-ever title as a mother, Williams swept through the first set like she was paying hourly babysitting rates.
