Syria: Bachelet condemns continued killings and displacements despite 'ceasefire'

Michelle Bachelet, High Commissioner for Human Rights, United Nations, on Friday, sought a prompt end to the hostilities in Idlib province, held by Syria's opposition, stating that the latest attempts at a ceasefire have failed to protect civilian lives.

The Syrian regime and its allies, however, have consistently broken the terms of the ceasefire, launching frequent attacks inside the zone, killing at least 1,300 civilians since the agreement.

"It is deeply distressing that civilians are being killed on a daily basis in missile strikes from both the air and the ground", Laurence said.

The United States, which has led a coalition to combat the Islamic State (IS) terror group in eastern Syria, does not have any military presence in northwestern Syria, including Idlib, but USA forces have occasionally carried out airstrikes targeting al-Qaida and other militant leaders in Idlib. 3 kiddies had been additionally those types of whom passed away.

Civilians continued to be killed and seriously injured before, during and after the "ceasefire agreement".

Four out of the five civilians killed in the Russian airstrike belonged to the same family.

The recent surge in violence began after Syrian and Russian warplanes resumed their airstrike campaign in Idlib, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

At least 18 civilians, including two children and a white helmets member, were killed in airstrikes launched by the Syrian regime forces on Idlib city. The strike also caused some structural damage to a girls' school.

High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet's spokesman, Jeremy Laurence, told VOA that immediately following the supposed cease-fire declared almost a week ago, ground-based strikes were being lobbed by both the Syrian government and rebel forces. Some have fled to smaller territories in northern Idlib while others have crossed into areas in northern Aleppo that are under the control of Turkey-backed armed groups and where levels of violence in such areas remain high.
