Aranda leaving LSU to become Baylor's coach

Aranda leaving LSU to become Baylor's coach

Prior to coaching at LSU, he served as defensive coordinator at Utah State and Wisconsin.

LSU's defensive coordinator Dave Aranda is now said to be in the running for the head coaching job at Baylor University.

The 43-year-old replaces Matt Rhule, who left Baylor to join the NFL's Carolina Panthers.

One of the first personnel moves Rhule made was hiring LSU passing game coordinator Joe Brady as the Panthers new offensive coordinator.

Baylor University released an official statement confirming the buzz that Aranda is the next in line to head the Bears' program. Baylor was connected to Virginia Tech's Justin Fuente, Louisiana's Billy Napier and others before ultimately deciding to hire Aranda. "From the exterior taking a bunch a question to in, I became as soon as so impressed staring at Baylor play. I am ready to touch down in Waco and in finding to work". Rhule spent three seasons at Baylor and this past season guided the Bears to 11 wins, a spot in the Big 12 championship game and a Sugar Bowl appearance. Last year, Aranda received a new four-year contract with a yearly salary of $2.5 million, making him one of the highest-paid coordinators in the country.

After Briles was sacked, Baylor started 6-0 under interim coach Jim Grobe in 2016 before losing 17 of its next 19 games.

Baylor improved to 7-6 with a bowl win in 2018, then started 9-0 this season before a 34-31 home loss to Oklahoma, which also beat the Bears in the Big 12 title game.

Aranda then had stops at Division II school Delta State in Mississippi, Southern Utah, Hawaii, Utah State and Wisconsin before his four seasons in the Southeastern Conference.
