The former NY 27th district representative pleaded guilty to felony conspiracy and false-statement charges on October 1, 2019. He was convicted of trading on insider information while a board member and a 16.8% stakeholder of Australian biotechnology company Innate Immunotherapeutics Ltd.

In announcing the sentence, USA prosecutor Geoffrey S. Berman expressed no sympathy for Collins.

"I can not face my constituents", Collins said.

Perhaps no one but U.S. District Court Judge Vernon Broderick knows what Collins' sentence will be, but hundreds of pages of court documents filed over the last week and a half may provide some insight. As indicated by the administration, Collins at that point plotted with relatives to guarantee Cameron Collins and companions sold offers since they were scared by a transitory end in the exchanging of the stock as opposed to on the grounds that they realized the stock cost would fall 92 percent for the organization headquartered in Sydney, Australia, with workplaces in Auckland, New Zealand. At that time, Innate had not publicly released the results and Collins, using his insider knowledge, called his son, Cameron, to alert him of the confidential news so Cameron and others close to the family could unload their shares of Innate to avoid enormous losses.

"Lawmakers bear the profound privilege and responsibility of writing and passing laws, but equally as important, the absolute obligation of following them", Geoffrey Berman, the Manhattan U.S. attorney, said in a statement.

Collins, who was the first seated congressman to support President Donald Trump's offer to the White House, resigned from Congress before pleading guilt. "Collins' hubris is a clear reminder that New Yorkers can and should ask more of their elected officials and that no legislature is above the law, no matter how powerful it is". He then lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation when asked about his conduct. But, on the day of the 2017 White House Congressional Picnic, Collins learned the trial had been a failure.

"I'm not an emotional person", he repeated often, staring at the reporters in the courtroom instead of the judge who would decide his fate.

US Representative Chris Collins (R-NY) holds a press conference with his wife Mary by his side in response to his arrest for insider trading on August 8, 2018 in Buffalo, New York. According to the Inner City Press, Collins said: "I am standing here, probably the last time I will do anything in public". He said some current members of Congress sent him texts Friday morning.

Since pleading guilty, Collins moved to Florida and the judge recommended that his sentence be served at FCP Pensacola, which is a minimum-security prison on the Florida panhandle.
