Springboks nominated for top Laureus award

Liverpool, who recovered from a three-goal first-leg deficit to beat Barcelona in their Champions League semi-final, will come up against Andy Murray in the Comeback of the Year category.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes Formula 1 team have been nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards after another successful year that saw the Briton claim a sixth World Championship and the Silver Arrows a sixth constructors title in a row.

Kipchoge's nomination to the Laureus World Sports Awards comes barely just a month after he won the World Athletics Athlete of 2019.

In the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Yearcategory, gymnast Simone Biles, bidding for her third Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award, is nominated alongside track and field stars Allyson Felix and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce andFIFA Women's World Cup Golden Ball and Golden Boot victor, Megan Rapinoe.

Six athletes have been shortlisted for the World Sportsman of the Year Award, including Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya, who became the first person to run a marathon in under two hours in October.

At 15, Coco Gauff is one of the youngest nominees for the 2020 Laureus Awards and is joined in the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year category by Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu, 19, the first woman to win the US Open on her debut, and Colombia's first-ever Tour de France victor, 22-year-old Egan Bernal. Cuba'sOmara Durand, the world's fastest female Paralympian in 2019, is joined by Dutch wheelchair tennis star Diede de Groot, US Paralympic skier and cyclist Oksana Masters, Dutch para-cyclist and para-triathlete Jetze Plat, Swissmarathon star andT54 800m world record breaker Manuela Schär and Britishseven-timepara-swimming World Championships 2019 gold medallist Alice Tai.

Osaka's not the only young WTA star up for an award as Bianca Andreescu is nominated for Breakthrough of the Year, and so is 15-year-old Coco Gauff.

There is further interest from a SA point of view in the Sporting Moment of the last 20 years - which is a celebration of the Laureus World Sports Awards' 20th anniversary - where former Olympic swimmer Natalie du Toit has been nominated.

The 68 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy will vote on the winner of each category, with the victors set to be announced in Berlin on February 17. The win and the resulting celebrations throughout South Africa highlighted the power of sport to unite and inspire a nation.
