IDF hits several Gaza targets in response to rocket fire

While no injuries were reported, the sirens sent residents scrambling for bomb shelters in Sa'ad, Kfar Aza and Nahal Oz, Times of Israel reported.

It appeared to mark the renewal of the arson balloon attacks that torched thousands of acres of Israeli fields along the Gaza border in recent years.

Israel targeted several Hamas military sites in retaliation to the 4 rockets.

Thursday's balloon launch appeared to reflect Hamas' unhappiness with the slow pace of the ceasefire efforts, which aim to ease a crippling Israeli blockade of Gaza in return for calm along the volatile border.

Israeli Haaretz news outlet reported Wednesday, citing the country's military, that four rockets have been launched from Gaza at Israel, with two of the missiles being intercepted by the Iron Dome system. Kochavi said that Israel would not hesitate forcefully striking urban areas since it's the enemy who chose to position itself there.

It came three days since alarms last sounded in Nahal Oz, apparently due to heavy machine gun fire from the coastal enclave.

Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, expressed its "sincere condolences" to Iran's leadership after Soleimani was killed in Baghdad on January 3 and hailed his support for the "Palestinian resistance", but did not issue any overt threat.

The four rockets fired at southern Israel were the first in almost a month and come during global efforts to bolster an informal truce between the Jewish State and Gaza's ruling Hamas militant group.

In November, Israel killed a senior leader of Islamic Jihad, which is a Hamas-aligned group in Gaza.

Islamic Jihad over two days fired around 450 rockets towards Israel, many of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome system, according to the army.
