Bobby Petrino back in coaching, could face Hogs in 2022

Missouri State is expected to announce its new head football coach on Wednesday morning, but there are competing reports regarding which controversial coach they are hiring.

Petrino, 58, will be introduced Thursday morning at a news conference at JQH Arena in Springfield.

Missouri State last week fired coach Dave Steckel, who went 13-42 in five seasons. The 58-year-old walked out on the Falcons midway through his first season with them in 2007, covered up an affair with his mistress in 2012, leading to his firing by Arkansas, and he was sacked by Louisville after going 2-8 in 2018.

A few months after that season ended with Arkansas fans excited to see where the program was headed, Petrino was injured in a motorcycle accident that exposed an extra-marital affair with an athletic department employee.

That 2-10 season was just the second season of Petrino's college head coaching career where one of his teams finished below.500. Petrino was 36-26 in his second stint with Louisville when he was sacked in 2018 in the midst of a seven-game losing streak.

His mom said she's bought all the Sculpey clay she could find within a 20-mile radius and they're waiting for more to ship in. Mom and dad will pay the shipping costs of the koalas when they're ready to be sent out.

The Associated Press contributed to this article. The Hilltoppers were 8-4 in 2013 and beat Kentucky in Petrino's only season there. Louisville was 2-8 when Petrino got dismissed with two games to go and finished the season 2-10.

Petrino has his work cut out for him as Missouri State hasn't had a winning season since 2009.

He led Louisville to league titles in two conferences (Conference USA, Big East) during his first stint and coached Heisman Trophy victor Lamar Jackson there in 2016. The university agreed to pay the remaining $14 million on his contract.

The Bears play in the Missouri Valley Conference and are part of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.

Petrino had been out of coaching since his ouster at Louisville.
