PC sales grow for the first time in seven years

The PC market saw over 70 million units shipped worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2019 - the industry's third consecutive quarter of sales growth - ending its declining sales business and recording consistent, positive growth for the first time in eight years.

Personal computers (PCs) sales in seven years, released from the lethargy in 2019 over. Dell, Apple, and Acer rounded out the top five, with Apple's Mac platform landing at 6.8 percent marketshare for the year. HP was the top PC company in 2018, but even though it finished second to Lenovo, HP was able to increase market share to 23.6%. "Without this shortage, shipments would have grown faster than the reported results", Kitagawa added. IDC also noted that the top three PC vendors - Dell, HP, and Lenovo - consolidated their 65 percent share in the PC market with excellent gains.

Lenovo Chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing said 2019 marked the beginning of the company's new growth strategy, which focuses on the development of smart Internet of Things, smart infrastructure and smart vertical industrial applications. However, HP is facing aggressive competition from Lenovo and Dell. Gartner didn't show as much growth year-over-year, but still marked down a 0.6 percent increase for 2019 for a total of 261.2 million units shipped for the year. According to IDC, the Q4 shipments came in at 71.8 million units, which represents 4.8 percent growth.

Gartner said that PC shipments rose just 0.6% year-over-year between 2018 and 2019.

The main reason for this is the increased demand for Windows-10 upgrades from the US, Europe, West Asia, Africa and Japan. The firm witnessed a growth of over 30 per cent in PC shipments in the US.

Gartner reported that two opposing factors affected PC sales: On one hand, the end of support for Windows 7 prompted businesses to invest in new hardware, giving new PC sales a shot in the arm.

After years of consistent declines, PC sales appear to have finally turned a corner. Overall, worldwide PC shipments were up 2.7 percent compared with 2018.

"We've already started to see this through the "foldable laptops" introduced at CES this past week along with initiatives that make PCs as easy as smartphones by allowing users to always be connected and ensuring a worry-free battery life". Shipment volumes were also down 2.2% for the full year 2019.
