Siemens considering quitting Aussie mine project

The chief executive of Siemens said Friday that the German engineering company will review its involvement in a coal mine in Australia after climate activists called for it to pull out of the project.

The Carmicheal coal mine is a thermal coal mine in the north of the Galilee Basin in Queensland Australia.

Siemens was awarded a contract a year ago to provide the technology for a railway network to transport coal from the remote mine in northern Queensland state, near the Great Barrier Reef.

Siemens received a contract past year for the supply of signal technology for a railway line for the transport of coal from a coal mine of the Indian Adani Group inland.

He continued by stating that: 'For the first time in Siemens history we will establish a Sustainability Committee with external members to give environmental concerns, even more, priority and attention in the future.

SIEMENS' boss yesterday announced that the German conglomerate has made a decision to remain involved in a controversial coal-mining project in Australia, despite massive environmental criticism as the country faces unprecedented bushfires.

Teenage Swedish activist Greta Thunberg joined the calls on social media, urging Siemens to make the "right decision".

Ranveer Singh, who co-starred with Alia in Zoya Akhtar's 2019 film Gully Boy , commented: "Here she is indeed Lulu the gangster". After Inshallah was shelved, the fans were eagerly waiting for the announcement of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next project.

The Siemens announcement was chastised widely in both countries.

With climate change partly to blame for these bushfires, climate campaigners have become increasingly outraged that plans to develop this coal mine show no sign of stopping.

The current bushfire crisis in Australia, which has already burned more than 10 million hectares of land and killed at least 27 people and more than one billion animals "is a terrifying foretaste of the climate change future if more coal mines are dug", Slattery said.

Adani Enterprises is an integrated infrastructure company with businesses spanning coal trading, coal mining, oil and gas exploration, ports, multi-modal logistics, power generation, and transmission and gas distribution. A "Stop Adani" campaign has said that without Siemens, Adani would struggle to build a rail line to the Galilee coal basin where there are now no coal mines.

Speaking after meeting climate activist Luisa Neubauer in Berlin, Kaeser told journalists he had offered her a seat on the supervisory board of the group's new Siemens Energy division.

There is also some support for Adani in parts of Queensland, largely due to perceived job opportunities.
