Oscar nominations: Joker, Netflix’s The Irishman go big

Roma came close to winning previous year, but missed out to Green Book.

Meanwhile, let's all celebrate the many good things about these Oscar nominations, which also include the fact that "Joker" seems to have broken the curse on genre movies, since it leads the field with 11 nominations, among them Best Picture, Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and Best Director (Todd Phillips).

Ever since the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite went viral in 2015, followed by the #MeToo movement initiated in 2017, Oscar nominations have faced controversy for selecting exceptionally few women and minorities in the top categories. And remember that Heller got well and truly snubbed past year, when "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" failed to get either Best Picture or Best Director nominations.

"American Factory", which is the first documentary to be released by Barack and Michelle Obama's production company, Higher Ground, received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature.

If "Parasite" won best picture, it would be the first foreign language film to do so.

Williams' last tournament win was the 2017 Australian Open, when she was in the early weeks of her pregnancy. In an interview following that loss, Williams said she had not even "felt ready to pick up a racquet".

"Scarlett Johansson was nominated TWICE and yet Lupita Nyong'o didn't get an Oscar nomination for playing TWO incredible roles in the same movie", one user questioned.

The 92nd Academy Awards will be held in Los Angeles on 9 February.

Unfortunately, Margot's Bombshell co-star Nicole Kidman, 52, was snubbed in the "Best Supporting Actress" for her role as former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson. Greta Gerwig, who in 2018 was the last woman to be nominated in the category (for Lady Bird), missed out on a nom for Little Women, with other notable absences including Scafaria and Marielle Heller for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

Thomas Newman, nominated for best original score for his work on 1917, is part of an extended family film-scoring dynasty with almost 100 nominations between them. His uncle, Lionel Newman, is an Oscar victor and his brother David Newman is an Oscar nominee.

The Oscars has a pretty bad track record with recognising female directors. Both fall short of Walt Disney, however, who had 59. Mind you, the Best Supporting Actor nominees already know that - their average age is also 71, lowered somewhat by the youngster Brad Pitt, aged 56. The actor portrays the real-life actor Dolemite with humour and tint of pathos, yet was unable to secure an Oscar nomination. In Hollywood came close seconds, both nabbing 10 nominations each.
