Once Again, No Women Were Nominated for Best Director at the Oscars

Many eyes had been on the category, with particular attention being paid to whether Little Women director Greta Gerwig or any other of this year's notable female directors could score a nomination in the category historically dominated by men. As Issa Rae pointedly nailed it when introducing the category for Best Director: "Congratulations to those men".

But the list for best director of a movie in 2020 - Sam Mendes for 1917, Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon A Time. Today, January 13th, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released its snub-heavy 2020 Oscar nominations list, and-shocker!-not a single woman was nominated for the Best Director category.

Previously, Saoirse Ronan was nominated for the Best Actress category for Brooklyn in 2016 and Lady Bird in the year 2018. But to me, Greta, since she started, has made two ideal films, and I hope when she makes her next flawless movie, she gets recognized for everything, because I think she's one of the most important filmmakers of our time.

Lina Wertmüller (Seven Beauties), Jane Campion (The Piano), Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) and Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) have also been nominated for best director.

First-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson achieved a rare feat on Monday when she was nominated for two acting honors, which will be doled out at the 92nd Academy Awards next month.

Prior to the Academy Award nominations, Greta Gerwig was similarly snubbed at the Golden Globes.

UK cabinet ministers to discuss Flybe rescue package
Last February, the airline was bought by a consortium led by Virgin Atlantic following poor financial results. Belfast City Airport declined to comment but did say it was "business as usual for Flybe " at the airport.

Noticeably absent from the list: women.

I think everybody's angry and quite rightly so. I don't know what the answer is, other than we're talking about it. Tom Hanks received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the movie, but Heller did not receive the Best Director nomination.

Gerwig was the only woman nominated in the best adapted screenplay category.

Greta Gerwig's Little Women picked up six nods, but Gerwig failed to land a directing nomination, even though her film was nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Writer Jenellicle Riley tweeted, "THE FAREWELL and HUSTLERS were two truly original, excellent and PROFITABLE films both written and directed by women and their total shut-out is discouraging".
