Could Red Sox fire Alex Cora over Astros’ cheating scandal?

Major League Baseball is also investigating claims that the Red Sox used video replays to steal signs from catchers to pitchers during their 2018 World Series-winning season, following a second report by The Athletic.

The Astros' manager, AJ Hinch, and general manager, Jeff Luhnow, have been suspended for a year while the club has been fined $5m and deprived of its first- and second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. Cora was the Astros' bench coach during the 2017 season.

Commissioner Rob Manfred said Monday that he will discipline Cora at the end of his investigation into the Red Sox' sign-stealing practices in 2018.

Per the league's report, the Astros used a complicated scheme where they filmed signs, decoded them in a separate room and relayed the upcoming pitches to batters by banging on dugout trash cans.

The Astros beat the LA Dodgers in seven games to claim their first-ever championship.

Fiers, 34, was not offered a new contract in Houston after the end of the 2017 season, having been left off their roster for the post-season.

Martin Scorcese's The Irishman , which was released on Netflix and features Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino, received ten nominations.

Crane gave no timetable for naming replacements for Luhnow and Hinch.

Former assistant GM Brandon Taubman, who was dismissed by Houston in October, is also banned for a year without pay. He is expected to oversee baseball operations department in the interim.

"I will withhold determining the appropriate level of discipline for Cora until after the DOI completes its investigation of the allegations that the Red Sox engaged in impermissible electronic sign stealing in 2018 while Cora was the manager", Manfred said.

Red Sox fans will now have to brace themselves for a possibly unparalleled punishment, and they'd better not act holier-than-thou in the aftermath.

The investigation found no use of illicit technology during the 2019 season.
