Cory Booker Drops Out Of 2020 Presidential Race

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) announced Monday the end to his 2020 presidential campaign in a statement posted to Twitter. "It was a hard decision to make, but I got in this race to win, and I've always said I wouldn't continue if there was no longer a path to victory".

Booker did not qualify for the democratic debate in Iowa on Tuesday, and was a vocal critic of the DNC's metrics.

The New Jersey senator, and former mayor of Newark, has always been considered a rising star in Democratic politics.

"Really Big Breaking News (Kidding): Booker, who was in zero polling territory, just dropped out of the Democrat Presidential Primary Race". He quickly fell behind less experienced candidates like South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg in both polling and financial resources.

Booker will be a juror at Trump's upcoming impeachment trial.

At one point, Booker even talked about prematurely ending his campaign unless he raised $1.7 million during the last 10 days of September. But he rarely drew a contrast with his opponents on the trail, even when asked directly, and even some of Booker's supporters anxious his message on Trump wasn't sharp enough to go up against a Republican president known for dragging his opponents into the mud.

But the high-spirited Booker never found traction with voters.

He instead will run for re-election to the U.S. Senate. He also released an early criminal justice reform plan that focused heavily on addressing sentencing disparities for drug crimes. That didn't land in a Democratic primary that has often rewarded candidates who promised voters they were tough-minded fighters who could take on Trump.

Despite his exit from the race, Booker's center-left platform, strong stump presence and relative youth are likely keep him in the campaign conversation as a potential running-mate for the eventual Democratic nominee.

Booker played a key role in the bipartisan criminal justice reform bill that Trump supported previous year, for example, a deal he helped strike two months after sparring with Republicans during the battle over Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation. A handful of candidates has launched campaigns for the seat, but Booker is expected to have an easy path to reelection.
