Qatar's emir visits Iran amid regional tension

Qatar's emir visits Iran amid regional tension

"At a juncture of time, certain regional countries imposed restrictions on Qatar, but Iran stood beside Qatar and will stand based on its duties as a neighbor", he said during a joint press conference with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Tehran.

Referring to his negotiations in Tehran, the Emir of Qatar added, "Based on our talks, a common commission of the two countries is going to be held in Iran within three months, and hopefully, our economic ties will also expand to the same level as our political relations".

Dr Hassan Rouhani also accepted the invitation of the Emir of Qatar to make a visit to the country.

Qatar is close to the USA and hosts Washington's largest military base in the region, but it also enjoys strong ties with Iran, with which it shares the world's largest gas field.

Last week, Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani visited Tehran for talks aimed at easing tension in the region following Soleimani's killing.

Hudson-Odoi scores first Premier League goal as Chelsea's big win
In Pulisic's absence, Callum Hudson-Odoi would be looking to earn a start after his performance in the FA Cup last weekend. Christian Pulisic missed the last game due to an injury incurred in training and will be out for a few weeks.

"Yes it's confirmed", an official at Qatar's Government Communications Office said, adding that Sheikh Tamim was flying to Iran for what is believed to be his first official visit to the Islamic republic, following a stop in Oman.

Sheikh Tamim left Doha for Muscat this morning "to offer condolences on the death of Sultan Qaboos", the state-run Qatar News Agency reported.

President Rouhani told the Qatari FM that Washington would pay a heavy price for its assassination and on Wednesday, Iran pounded two United States airbases in Iraq with a volley of ballistic missiles.

The visit follows the assassination of an Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani, in an aerial drone strike, reports Anadolu news agency, according to Middle East Monitor.
