'Deeply saddened': Queen sends condolences to families of Iran plane crash victims

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's diplomacy was vindicated on Saturday when Iran admitted that it accidentally shot down a Ukrainian airliner as Trudeau had suggested, and his handling of the incident may increase support at home, Canadian political observers said.

Iran's president said it was a "disastrous mistake" and apologized.

Even as top Iranian officials and the military issued apologies, protests against authorities spread across Iran, including in the capital, Tehran, plus Shiraz, Esfahan, Hamedan and Orumiyeh.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the arrest was a "flagrant violation of global law" and repeated calls for Iran to de-escalate tensions.

"The Iranian government must allow human rights groups to monitor and report the facts on the ground about the ongoing protests of the Iranian people", Trump wrote.

No U.S. soldiers were killed, but in the tense hours after that, the Ukrainian Boeing 737 was cleared to take off from Tehran airport and then brought down by a missile fired in error by an operator who mistook the plane for an attacker. "It is more important than ever that Iran abandons its reckless ambitions and begins to behave like a normal country", said the official.

"There can be no new massacre of peaceful demonstrators, nor any internet outage".

Xavi in talks to take Barcelona job, club confirms
Xavi spoke after guiding Al Sadd to a 4-1 victory over Al Rayyan in Qatar's Qatar that propelled them to the final. He said: "The issue of Xavi going to Barcelona is normal and expected because he will be at his club".

"A full and complete investigation must be conducted", Trudeau said.

Iran insisted for days that it did not down the plane, but Trudeau said on Thursday he had received intelligence that suggested it did. The incident coincided with Iran's missile attack on a USA military base in Iraq.

Public fury at Iran's authorities grew as questions about the plane crash mounted.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards, in a rare step, apologized to the nation and accepted full responsibility.

Soleimani's death in a US drone strike had drawn huge crowds of mourners on to the streets in Iran, which Iranian officials said showed public support for the leadership.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif tweeted "human error" was to blame for the downing of the passenger jet.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded that Iran punish those responsible for the downing of a Ukrainian airliner and pay compensation.
