US Pressures UK on Final Huawei Decision

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to press British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab over Huawei at a meeting in Washington on Thursday, the sources said.

The never-ending saga of Huawei's involvement in the UK's 5G infrastructure continues as the U.S. piles on the pressure.

The U.S. was also planning to send a delegation that included deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger to Britain this week to discuss the use of the manufacturer's networking equipment.

"The security and resilience of the UK's telecoms networks is of paramount importance", a government spokesperson is quoted as saying.

The UK is expected to make a final decision this month about whether to include 5G equipment from the Chinese vendor.

The U.S. government has blocked Huawei from developing such networks domestically, and Mr.

Cotton, a vocal critic of Huawei, proposed a little-noticed provision in a defense bill signed into law last month that directs intelligence agencies to consider the use of telecoms and cybersecurity infrastructure "provided by adversaries of the United States, particularly China and Russian Federation", when entering intelligence-sharing agreements with foreign countries. It declares: "Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled.Intelligence of or under the control of the United States, including intelligence products 2 ARM20007 S.L.C. 0B1 2N GK2 1 of the intelligence community, may not be shared with any country that permits operation within its national borders of fifth-generation (5G) telecommunications technology of Huawei Technologies Co".
