Starbucks customer dies after chasing laptop thieves

A man died on New Year's Eve after chasing down the person who snatched his laptop while he was working at a Starbucks.

The theft occurred just after 11:30 a.m. inside the Starbucks on the 2000 block of Mountain Boulevard in Montclair.

Witnesses claimed the victim grabbed onto the robber's auto door handle as the vehicle accelerated and accidentally slammed his head against a parked auto, causing him to bleed profusely.

"When the suspect approached and took the laptop, the victim chased the suspects right around the corner", said Officer Johnna Watson, a spokeswoman for the Oakland Police Department. His identity has not been released.

The victim was sitting inside doing work on his computer when one person grabbed his laptop and ran to a vehicle waiting outside.

On Wednesday (local time), Oakland police confirmed they had arrested two suspects in connection with the man's death.

Personnel from the Oakland Fire Department were in the area during the incident and attempted to provide first aid to the victim.

She added: 'I couldn't see his face because it was covered with blood.

The victim, believed to be in his 20s or 30s, died from head injuries in a hospital on Tuesday after he was dragged by the suspect's SUV and then flung onto a parked vehicle as it sped off. "He was a young man".

Investigators are still determining if additional suspects are involved, the police department said in a statement.
