Like Porcello, Wacha is believed to be a reclamation project for the Mets.

The former American League Cy Young Award victor had multiyear offers but preferred to sign a one-year contract, according to ESPN.

The New York Mets are now focussed on "luxury" moves after filling all of their roster needs.

Porcello spent the last five years with the Boston Red Sox, where he was durable but wildly inconsistent. Both are considered bounce-back candidates who could turn into helpful additions in the back end of a starting rotation that already has a chance to be one of the best in baseball next year.

"He's done it", general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said. It also puts the Mets at six starters at the moment.

"There has been a lot of talk that we have not started pitching so much in the last few weeks", Van Wagenen said.

Wacha and Porcello competing for the No. 5 spot leaves an odd-man-out to fill in should the injury bug strike the Mets' impressive top-four of Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Marcus Stroman, and Steven Matz. But adding rotation depth was one of the team's goals of the offseason.

Now, their depth sets the stage for a potential spring training battle for the fifth spot if they do not trade a starter before then. In a press conference on Friday, Wacha made it clear that he plans to start.

It's clear the Mets had planned for the possibility of Wacha moving to the bullpen. They now have six proven starters in their rotation, with all six proving at one point or another that they can perform like a frontline starter.
