Juvenile suspect arrested in killing of Barnard College freshman

He has since been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.

Juveniles convicted in NY state's family courts can be sent to detention facilities until they are 21 in many cases, and are often released after that.

As many as three attackers were involved, police have said, and the president of Barnard College said Majors was stabbed during an armed robbery. She staggered up a staircase onto the street where a school security guard found her and called 911. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators who have reviewed the surveillance video say Majors was attacked while coming down the steps of Morningside Park.

He admitted to the robbery attempt and stabbing and alluded to two other suspects, according to the source on Friday, adding that the investigation is still underway.

Police officials and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio faced questions about the pattern of crimes in and around the park in Thursday's news conference.

The 13 year old was was caught with trespassing yesterday.

Upon arrest, officers found a knife on him.

Tessa, originally from Virginia, moved to NY in the fall to attend Barnard College, a part of Columbia University.

"Tessa was just beginning her journey at Barnard and in life".

"This is an unthinkable tragedy that has shaken us to our core", Beilock said in a statement. "Please know that we are all grieving together and I am thinking of you as we process this very bad news as a community", the statement read.

On Thursday night, Barnard College students and community members gathered to mourn the teen's death.

Majors, who was from Virginia, played in a band and had recently played her first gig in New York City, according to her Instagram.

Morningside Heights residents were also shaken by the murder, especially since the neighborhood has witnessed violent attacks and robberies before, with almost two dozen incidents in the park since October 2018, according to CBS2.
