Russia's only aircraft carrier on fire in port

The Admiral Kuznetsov has seen action in Russia's military campaign in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad, with its aircraft carrying out airstrikes on rebel forces.

"Five people are injured, three are unaccounted for, and six were saved from the Admiral Kuznetsov, which was at port in Murmansk, according to reports from Russian state news agencies TASS and Interfax".

The fire on the Admiral Kuznetsov broke out during welding work at a shipyard in the Arctic port of Murmansk and spread quickly through the carrier's internal compartments.

According to Russia's state-owned news outlet TASS, the fire first began in the vessel's engine room on the second deck before rapidly expanding to encompass an area of around 600 meters, or almost two thousand square feet.

The Defense Ministry said the fire was localized.

Before Thursday's fire, work on the Kuznetsov was expected to be completed by the end of 2020, with the warship rejoining the navy in 2021.

The ship led a naval group off the Syrian coast, with fighters from the carrier hitting more than 1,200 targets during its mission. However, the Kremlin has used it to project military might far from Russia's shores.

Britain's then-defence minister Michael Fallon dubbed the Admiral Kuznetsov Russia's "ship of shame" for its role in the Syria conflict.

"The press service of the Zvyozdochka ship fix centre said the specialists working onboard the vessel had been evacuated".

The Russian navy has been battling financial hardships, aging shipyards, and delays in fulfilling orders for new ships.
