Maryland company surprises employees with $10 million bonus

In a press release, the company said all 198 employees will be paid a bonus exclusively based on years of service, "with the average employee receiving United States dollars $50,000". "I think I said a few times, 'I can't breathe, ' I felt a little nauseous and then just celebrated".

St. John Properties, a commercial real estate company, says the bonus was possible because they met their goal of developing 20 million square feet of space. "What happened tonight was magical", said 19-year company veteran Danielle Valenzia.

The company said the bonus is on top of the company's annual year-end bonus.

A video capturing the announcement showed surprised employees, some of whom teared up and covered their faces when they saw their bonus amount. "I heard over and over again that night that this was a life-changing event".

"We wanted to do something to thank all our employees for helping us achieve our goal, and we wanted to do something big", Mr Maykrantz told CNN.

Employees will receive US$50,000 on average, St. John Properties announced on its website. They are the foundation and the reason behind the success of our company. "Without the team, we are nothing", St. John said.

St. John executives joked - nervously, according to Maykrantz - in the weeks leading up to the surprise that they hoped no one would retire after receiving the surprise bonus. "We're always looking for the top-quality individuals out there to hire".
