Vikings and Cowboys kind of swapped kickers

The writing was on the wall for Brett Maher, and mostly because that wall happened to be on the broad side of a barn he's been unable to hit lately. Maher kicked a 62-yarder in 2018 and added another from 62 along with one from 63 this season. They worked out kickers again after Maher missed a field goal Thursday in the loss to the Chicago Bears.

I'll have whatever he's having.

The Dallas Cowboys are making a change.

When he arrived back at the Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters, he was cut.

Although Maher is only in his second National Football League season, he's only two years younger than Forbath, whom the Cowboys have some familiarity with. It's the second time in a week the team had looked at potential alternatives on the free agent market.

The Cowboys had Forbath on their roster during the off-season in 2012, cutting him that spring before he joined NFC East rival Washington and led the National Football League at 94% by making 17 of 18 kicks as a rookie that year. He originally went to camp with the Cowboys in 2011, when Dan Bailey won a training camp battle.

Forbath kicked for New England on December 1, making a 23-yarder while missing one of two extra points in the Patriots' 28-22 loss at Houston.

All he had to do is prove he's better than Maher, along with Rose and Vizcaino, and the job was his.

Maher, who became the first kicker in the history of the National Football League to make at least three field goals from at least 60 yards earlier this season, has struggled to make more moderate attempts.

Now sitting at 6-7 and in jeopardy of not making the playoffs, and being quickly dismissed if they do make it, a change had to be made somewhere. That's more than any other kicker in each of the past four seasons.
