Lawyer to be charged with graft in new woes for Netanyahu

Israel's state prosecutor said Thursday he intends to indict seven men, including close associates of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a sweeping graft case related to a possible conflict of interest involving a $2 billion purchase of German submarines.

Israel's justice ministry said on Thursday that subject to pre-indictment hearings for all the suspects, it meant to charge Netanyahu's personal lawyer and cousin, David Shimron, with money-laundering.

Among those to be charged was Netanyahu's personal attorney, David Shimron, who is also his cousin.

Netanyahu was questioned, but not named as a suspect, in the submarine probe, known as "file 3000".

The justice ministry said that charges were also expected against a businessman who represented the firm in Israel and against a former head of the Israeli navy. The police also suggested indicting former deputy of the National Security Council, Avriel Bar-Yosef, for bribery, fraud, breach of trust and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Mr. Netanyahu was recently charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust in three separate corruption cases in which he is accused of trading regulatory or legislative favours in exchange for lavish gifts and favourable news coverage.

Thursday's announcement comes as lawmakers face a looming December 11 deadline to find a solution or see parliament dissolved once again.
