US's Afghanistan envoy arrives in Kabul, next stop

US peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Kabul on December 4 at the start of his latest round of talks to find a solution to the 18-year Afghan conflict.

But that same month, Trump abruptly called the year-long effort "dead" and withdrew an invitation to the Taliban to meet in the U.S. after the killing of an American soldier.

Zalmay Khalilzad has arrived in Kabul to fulfill President Ashraf Ghani, a senior Afghan official instructed AFP, lower than per week after Trump visited Afghanistan and gave his blessing for a return to negotiations.

In a conversation with WION, Suhail Shaheen, spokesperson of Taliban political office, said that no "specific date is fixed for resumption of talks with the US".

Khalilzad's visit came just days after Trump visited USA troops in Afghanistan for the Thanksgiving holiday, when he hinted at a resumption of peace talks with the Taliban.

According to a statement, Khalilzad will fly to Doha, where he will rejoin talks with Taliban negotiators to discuss steps that could lead to a ceasefire and a settlement to the war in. Another official said both the U.S. and Afghan Taliban wanted result oriented talks and Islamabad fully backed this mission.

Last month Taliban freed an American and an Australian professor in exchange for the release of three Taliban leaders, including Anas Haqqani, brother of Taliban deputy chief Sirajuddin Haqqani. It will be his first trip to Afghanistan since President Trump announced he would be restarting talks with the Taliban after declaring them dead in September.

The agreement also called for an intra-Afghan dialogue to begin within 10 days of the signing.

"Only way forward is ceasefire and Taliban engaging with the Afghan government, Afghan people, once they engage with them, India will have no hesitation with engaging with Taliban", Sinha said.

The Taliban have not agreed to the proposal and insisted the U.S. should first sign the peace agreement that will lead to withdrawal of foreign troops and the Taliban will guarantee Afghan soil is not used by anyone against the USA, its allies and other countries.

Afghan forces recently announced that the group's local branch, dubbed IS-K or ISIS-K, was completely defeated in the eastern province of Nangarhar.
