Pakistan Women are being Sold to China as Brides

Although the investigators attempted to stop the trafficking, it was halted as it may impact the ties between Pakistan and China.

According to media reports, 629 girls and women from different parts of Pakistan have been sold as brides to Chinese men and trafficked to China.

This list provides the most accurate number of women trapped in human trafficking traps since 2018.

The biggest blow for the investigation came after a court in Faisalabad acquitted all 31 Chinese nationals who were arrested in connection to the trafficking case.

A statement by the spokesperson of the Chinese embassy dated December 4, quotes a question pertaining the AP report which claimed that 629 girls and women from across Pakistan had been sold to Chinese men.

Activists and officials with knowledge of the country's trafficking investigation speak of an intimidation campaign by the government toward those attempting to curb trafficking and bring about justice for the women enslaved, citing pressure from above, abrupt transfers of civil servants and investigators, and an unofficial moratorium on media reporting related to the issue.

Christians, the report goes on to say, are targeted because they are among the poorest minority groups in Pakistan.

In May this year, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, when asked about the trend, had said: "We have to protect our girls and we also have to protect our bilateral relations".

However, it sends a signal that US-China tensions will continue to deepen, he told AFP news agency. The Basic Law is Hong Kong's mini-constitution.

Due to the retaliation panic, many of them refused to talk about this matter and remained anonymous for a longer period of time.

It seems that brides are being sold in Pakistan.

"The two governments of China and Pakistan support the formation of happy families among their peoples on a voluntary basis to comply with laws and regulations, while having zero tolerance and fighting decisively against anyone who engages in an illegal cross-border marriage behavior "the ministry said in a statement sent by fax Monday to the Beijing AP office".

"No one is doing anything to help these girls", an unidentified official involved in the investigation told AP.

"The Chinese and Pakistani brokers make between four million and 10 million rupees ($25,000 and $65,000) from the groom, but only about 200,000 rupees ($1,500) is given to the family", a senior official, anonymous due to proximity to the investigation, told AP. One investigation report, according to AP, alleges that organs were harvested from some of the women sent to China.

China has been a strong ally of Pakistan for decades, particularly in its irritable relationship with India. Under the $75 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project, Beijing has promised Islamabad a sprawling package of infrastructure development, from road construction and power plants to agriculture. It said Pakistan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea and Vietnam have "all have become source countries for a brutal business".

"It is horrifying that women are treated in this way without the authorities showing any concern in any of the countries".

An FIA team also raided houses in Lahore where they arrested nine Chinese men, a woman and three local accomplices and rescued two Pakistani brides.
