If you think you have the flu, you should contact your physician right away to get treated with antiviral medication, which is most effective within the first 48 hours of onset of illness.

Karen Martin, an epidemiologist at the Minnesota Department of Health, said the World Health Organization looks at data from around the world to try to find the three or four flu strains on which to base a vaccine. The most common symptoms are fever, chills, headache, joint and muscle pain and extreme fatigue.

Parents are being urged not to delay in getting the flu vaccine for their toddlers and children with the take-up rate worryingly lower than a year ago. It can for instance, help people to understand the possible effects of their decisions such as the effects of not getting a flu vaccine.

An increasing number of doctor visits across the country are linked with the flu - a sign the 2019-20 season is officially underway.

"The vaccine will protect children against the flu virus, but if they do not get the flu shot and they are infected, there will be no cure".

Dr. Pedro A. Piedra, professor of molecular virology and microbiology and of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, says now is the time to get vaccinated to ensure the best protection against flu virus throughout the season. "But we have it now and everyone who needs it should get it without delay".

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs.

Glen Nowak, Ph.D., the principal investigator, and director of the Center for Health and Risk Communication headquartered at UG's Grady College said in a related press release, "Immersive VR increases our ability to give people a sense of what can happen if they do or don't take a recommended action". Quadrivalent flu vaccines are highly suitable for infants and geriatrics younger than 65 years and have been regulatory approvals to include newly chosen flu strains. The flu virus is now well in circulation.

To help prevent spreading the virus, keep in mind to practice good hand hygiene, including covering your mouth when sneezing or coughing, washing your hands frequently, and using hand sanitizer. In the most severe cases, the flu can result in a hospital stay or even death. Flu can be spread in the air when people with the virus cough or sneeze, or by touching a surface with the virus on it and then touching their mouth or eyes. It takes roughly 10-14 days to develop antibodies to fully protect you from the flu, so if you were exposed in that time frame you are not fully protected from getting the flu.
