Nancy Pelosi Announces House Will Proceed With Impeachment

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is bristling over a question about whether she "hates" U.S. President Donald Trump.

Longtime Democratic analyst David Axelrod, who served as president Barack Obama's chief campaign strategist, offered a blunt prediction for the impeachment timetable. In 2009, during her previous stint as House speaker, Pelosi, who supports abortion rights, met with Pope Francis' predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, for a conversation that the Vatican later said touched on "protecting human life at all stages of its development".

"The president abused his power for his own personal political benefit at the expense of our national security by withholding military aid and (a) crucial Oval Office meeting in exchange for an announcement of an investigation into his political rival", Pelosi said in a televised statement. Only one article of impeachment has to be approved for Trump to be impeached, and the House then shifts the process to the Senate for trial. Two US Presidents (Andrew Jackson and Bill Clinton) were impeached by the House but were to convicted in the trial, resulting in their continuation in office. But neither man was forced from office.

At the hearing marked by partisan disagreements over Trump's conduct toward Ukraine, three constitutional law professors, called by Democrats, testified that they believed Trump committed impeachable offenses. "This will mean that the beyond important and seldom used act of Impeachment will be used routinely to attack future Presidents".

Polling shows Americans are about evenly split on impeaching and removing Trump - and the process has the potential to backfire on Democrats who face reelection in districts won by Trump. I think he is cruel when he doesn't deal with helping our Dreamers, of which we are very proud.

The Judiciary Committee is studying whether Trump's actions rate as something punishable by impeachment.

The poll shows 47% disapproved the president's performance for December 5, down from 50% a day earlier. The Ukrainians eventually received the assistance.

It was a warning scarcely needed among the official set, least of all by President Donald Trump as he fights Pelosi and the Democrats in their drive to impeach him.

Pelosi did not announce the charges against Trump, but they could include abuse of power, obstruction of Congress and obstruction of justice. However, lawmakers dispute the meaning of what was said.

Judiciary panel Democrats on Wednesday said they may look beyond Trump's relations with Ukraine to include the president's earlier alleged efforts to impede former special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into his 2016 campaign's relations with Russian Federation, but they stopped short of saying that could trigger a separate charge.
