Former Notre Dame RB George Atkinson, 27, passes away

The Athletic's Pete Sampson was first to report the news.

Without my daughter, I don't know where I would be right now.

The athlete's death came about a year after his twin brother, Josh Atkinson, died by suicide. After his brother's death, Atkinson III wrote a letter detailing their family life. The 27-year-old described the struggles of living with a mother who was addicted to drugs and how he and his brother relied on one other to survive a rough childhood. - He became once the son of former Oakland Raiders security, two-time Pro Bowler and Enormous Bowl XI champion George Atkinson II. Years later, their mother died after complications from Crohn's disease. Josh Atkinson was a defensive back during the same time.

"I always knew I had to discover a plan to keep going and be a role model for her", He wrote. "On Christmas Eve, he disappeared". His daughter, who was two at the time, helped him find his way out of a very dark time. Drunk and upset, he was on the verge of driving to the bridge and doing something stupid. He said that he felt guilty because we had disconnected the support of our mother's life. I told him it was our decision. I assured him that no one was blaming anyone and that he would take it away because it was in God's hand.

I calmed him down and brought him home.

The guilt was too much for Josh and he hanged himself. He was also institutionalized for self-harm. She gave me a second breath of motivation. "That will lead us nowhere".

"I cannot express in words the pain of losing my twin brother (Joshua Alexander Atkinson)".

The Atkinson twins played football together at Notre Dame and were members of the 2011 recruiting class. Atkinson III rushed for almost 1,000 yards and had 10 rushing touchdowns during his three seasons with the Fighting Irish.

George didn't stay long at the Raiders where he primarily returned punts, he then returned punts for the Cleveland Browns in 2016, but he was mostly relegated to practice squads.
