The rape survivor was on her way for hearing in her court case when she was accosted by the accused.

The men poured petrol on her and set her ablaze in the early hours of Thursday in the Unnao district. The woman has been referred to a Lucknow hospital.

Responding to the brutal incident, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra upped the ante against Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and accused them of lying about the law and order situation in the state.

"Yesterday, the home minister of the country and the Uttar Pradesh chief minister clearly lied that law and order in Uttar Pradesh has become better".

In a tweet, she said, "Seeing such incidents occur on a daily basis saddens one's heart".

But the real figure is believed to be far higher as many women in India don't report cases to police due to fear or shame. "BJP leaders should now stop false propaganda", Priyanka said in a tweet.

The girl's family alleged that Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a legislator from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had engineered the accident.

In July this year the rape survivor's vehicle was mysterious hit by a truck, killing two of her aunts and seriously injuring her and her lawyer.
