The news that stunned many in the college football world Monday morning out of Seattle - that Chris Petersen was stepping away as Washington's head coach and being replaced by defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake - hit home in a different way for Gerald Alexander.

The 55-year-old Petersen compiled a career record of 146-38 during his eight seasons at Boise State and six years at Washington, included a 54-26 mark on Montlake.

Petersen is the third notable coach to step down from a major Power Five program before age 60 over the last few seasons. I will be a Husky for life, but now it's the right time for me to get away from my duties as head coach and recharge. He led the Huskies to Pac-12 Championships in 2016 and 2018, the College Football Playoff semifinal in 2016 and three straight New Year's Six games from (2016-18), but lost them all. He coached defensive backs in 2014-15 and was elevated to co-defensive coordinator alongside Pete Kwiatkowski in 2016. He was the fifth-fastest coach to reach 100 wins.

Petersen is one of the most successful FBS coaches.

"Chris has been transformational for not only our football program, but our entire athletic department", Washington athletic director Jennifer Cohen said. "It has been such a privilege to sign how he has been so committed to the come of our younger males, no longer gorgeous on the sphere, however extra importantly off". He was Washington's chosen successor to Steve Sarkisian, drawn to the varsity by the historical past of this system and the chance to check himself on a much bigger stage - whereas not leaving the consolation of a area he had spent most of his skilled profession.

Washington became as soon as anticipated to be a contender within the Pac-12 all over again this twelve months, however struggles to exchange the loss of lots of key avid gamers on protection and an inconsistent offense led to a subpar campaign.

What he brings to the head coaching position is enthusiasm and energy - and this may be exactly what is needed right now to push Washington to the next level. "I've been dreaming of this opportunity for as long as I can remember and I can't think of a better place to do it than in the world-class city of Seattle and at such a prestigious university with a rich football tradition".

Before landing on Petersen's Boise State staff, Lake had stints as a defensive backs coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions.

As we all know, Coach Lake is one of the best recruiters in the country, period.

But it's still a talented team, it's not going to take much to turn things back around, and now it's up to Jimmy Lake to try. Jimmy is a great teacher of the game and his track record of developing young men both on and off the field speaks for itself.
