Xiaomi confirms the Mi 10 will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865

Xiaomi confirms the Mi 10 will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865

Qualcomm is billing the Snapdragon 865 as a 5G platform, so expect to see a lot more 5G-capable flagship phones in 2020.

Three new Snapdragon chipsets are on the way: the 765, 765G (the G stands for gaming), and the 865 5G.

"5G will open new and exciting opportunities to connect, compute, and communicate in ways we've yet to imagine and we are happy to be a key player driving the adoption of 5G around the world", Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon said in a prepared statement. The naming seems to imply a combination of two family trees, one from the Snapdragon 700 series, the other from the 800 line.

The 865 5G is the "premium" chip, based on the x55 modem, and offers support for Gigapixel camera speeds, which means 8K video at 30fps, 4K video with 64MP of resolution on each frame, and cameras that offer up to 200MP of resolution. Of course, it will be less powerful than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. We don't know what 5G modem will be embedded with these SoCs, but we'd reckon that it won't be the Snapdragon X55.

Infighting roils NATO as leaders gather in London
They pledged to "move toward" spending 2% of GDP on their national defence budgets by 2024. The clause has only ever been activated once, after the 9-11 attacks in the United States.

The details for each are scarce at this moment, because Qualcomm for some reason believes that they should drag this news out beyond a single press release. In some sense, it is as much a descendant of the Snapdragon 855 as the 865 is a direct successor. However 5G gained't be included by default, just by advantage of getting the newest and best Qualcomm chipset.

FTC disclosure: Qualcomm flew us to Maui to handle these announcements, but the content of our coverage of these announcements consists of our own thoughts. The lower-cost Snapdragon 765 platform could lead to a follow-up for Moto's Z3 and Z4, which anchored the low end of Verizon's 5G line this year.

Qualcomm promised to bring 5G to more affordable price points back at IFA 2019 and has delivered with the Snapdragon 765 and 765G. Expect news to break regarding the first 865-powered phones at or right before MWC 2020 in February. The first of these handsets will likely be announced in Q1 2020 as well.

We'll have more reporting this week from the Snapdragon Summit, which has become a way to foreshadow how Android phones and always-on laptops will change in the next 12 months. Xiaomi says its Xiaomi Mi 10 flagship will launch with the Snapdragon 865 in Q1 2020.
