Protests in India over Telangana vet's suspected rape, murder

CCTV footage, police reports and witness accounts suggest the attack had been premeditated. The accused, who saw the woman parking her two-wheeler near the toll plaza in the evening, deflated a tyre and on her return at about 9.30 p.m. offered her to get it fixed.

The residents of the colony where the woman stayed turned away political leaders and others who wanted to call on her family to express their sympathies, but later in the day Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan and Congress Lok Sabha member A Revanth Reddy met the grieving members. "The accused, who were all drunk, had also attempted to forcibly make the victim drink liquor, but she did not do so", the official said. Four men who were arrested in connection with the case were sent to judicial custody for 14 days on Saturday. The body was wrapped in a blanket and had been doused with kerosene.

Police said the suspects allegedly offered to fix a flat tire on the victim's motorbike then took her in a truck to a secluded spot where she was killed.

While the suspects were quickly detained, the killing sparked new outrage in a country that has been in the worldwide spotlight over its handling of sex assaults since the brutal gang-rape and murder of a student on a Delhi bus in 2012.

According to the National Commissioner for Women (NCW), the police asked the victim's mother if she was having an affair with anyone and ignored the family's pleas that their daughter's failure to return home was unusual. It was only six hours after the her family raised concern that the police began looking for her.

Prince Andrew 'may never return to public life'
Roberts has claimed Epstein paid her to have sex with Prince Andrew on three occasions starting in 2001, including once in London. He said the decision was reviewed after Epstein's death and police decided not to change policy.

Hundreds of locals staged a protest since morning outside the police station demanding that the accused be publicly hanged, with people even throwing slippers on police personnel. If the police had responded immediately maybe the girl could have been saved. He was upset that the perpetrators of such heinous crimes are living amidst us.

The rape and subsequent murder of the woman triggered widespread public outrage with demands from netizens seeking "instant justice".

"The only goal of this protest is to ensure that I am not burned to death tomorrow", she told reporters later, fighting back tears.

"Every 20 minutes, there is a rape in India. I don't want to die".

On Saturday, protesters pelted stones at a police vehicle as the accused were being taken to the jail in Hyderabad, and police used mild force to control the crowd. According to government figures, more than 32,000 rape cases were reported in 2017, but the real figure is believed to be far higher.
