Tesla Cybertruck: Elon Musk unveils freakish £31,000 'bulletproof' pickup in chaotic launch

Tesla CEO Elon Musk just unveiled the Cybertruck, the company's first electric pickup truck.

He also boasted of the truck's "shatterproof" windows, but things went awry when Tesla design chief Franz von Holzhausen smashed the window glass with a heavy metal ball thrown at close range.

A second attempt fared little better however, and another window was left badly damaged.

"Oh my f. god", Musk said, when the window broke.

The Tesla Cybertruck is expected to go on sale in late 2021 for the relatively low price of $39,900.

No date has been given for its release but analysts said it would not be ready before the end of 2021 at the earliest.

People take pictures of the newly unveiled all-electric battery-powered Tesla's Cybertruck at Tesla Design Center in Hawthorne, California on November 21, 2019.

With the launch, Tesla is edging into the most profitable corner of the US auto market, where buyers tend to have fierce brand loyalty. GM wasn't prepared to share any additional information about the mystery electric pickup truck, but Barra also noted in her comments that GM worked to understand what the typical truck buyer desires, but also what "lifestyle" electric vehicle owners want.

'They´re very much creatures of habit, ' Gordon said. The top three selling vehicles in America are pickup trucks.

Ford and GM are gearing up to challenge Tesla more directly with new offerings like the Ford Mustang Mach E electric SUV as well as electric pickups.

"Elon Musk is trying to not be one-dimensional when it comes to automotive, " said Alyssa Altman, transportation lead at digital consultancy Publicis Sapient. 'He doesn't want to look like he only has a small selection.

It's highly unlikely we'll ever see this bad boy in Australia, but it will allegedly hit some limited markets in late 2021, with a tri-motor variant coming in 2022.

In April, Ford invested $500 million in startup Rivian, which plans to build its own electric pickup beginning in fall 2020.

Tesla has struggled to meet delivery targets for its sedans, and some fear the new vehicle will shift the company´s attention away from the goal of more consistently meeting its targets.

We assume that the decisions were made quite some time ago, as too many projects were launched (with Tesla and Rivian probably the most eagerly awaited) that there is no possibility to ignore the dawn of BEVs and simply keep producing gas and diesel trucks.
