Sixteen people found sealed in trailer on ferry bound for Ireland

Staff on the ferry, with the assistance of the lorry driver, opened the trailer unit after the discovery and the men were brought to a private lounge where they received immediate medical and welfare care, police said in a statement.

At 9:20pm last night the Stena Horizon roll on roll off passenger ship left Cherbourg in France for Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford.

All of them are reportedly in "good health".

A paramedic who assessed the 16 men found in a lorry container on a ferry yesterday says if they weren't young and healthy things could have been very different.

The 16 are believed to be all men, aged approximately between 20 and 40 years old.

There was no immediate comment from Irish police or indications of the people's nationalities.

Stena Line said it has alerted the security and immigration officials in Rosslare so that necessary arrangements can be made for the people upon the arrival of the ferry which is now on its voyage to Rosslare from Cherbourg, a sea port in northwest France.

The Stena ferry is now travelling from France to Rosslare in County Wexford and will be met by gardaí and emergency services when it docks at the scheduled time of 3pm.

The ship is now in the Celtic Sea and is due to arrive at around 3.30pm.

Sixteen people were discovered on Thursday in a sealed trailer on a passenger ferry traveling to Ireland from France and all are in good health, Swedish ferry operator Stena Line said in a statement.

It is due to dock in Ireland around 3.30pm.

Tánaiste Simon Coveney said the Gardaí will be on hand to meet the ferry.
