Lawyer shot dead in freak court accident by gun tagged as evidence

The court was in session and a house robbery case was on trial.

KwaZulu-Natal Judge President Achmat Jappie said that Ferreira-Watt's death was a huge loss to the prosecution and administration of justice.

Top advocate Addelaid Ferreira-Watt, 51, screamed in agony as she was blown off her feet when the discharge from a shotgun blew a gaping hole in her hip as she was opening the case.

A police spokesperson told the South African newspaper that investigators are now reviewing the shooting as a culpable homicide - but it's not immediately clear who could potentially face charges. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this hard time.

Addelaid Ann Ferreira-Watt, 51, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital Monday following the incident in Ixopo regional court, according to The Sunday Times.

"When the short gun was handed in as evidence, the firearm went off accidentally and shot a court official on the left hip, she was then taken to hospital where she later passed away".

KwaZulu-Natal director of public prosecutions Elaine Zungu said Ms Ferreira-Watt's death would be "mourned by all", according to The Times.

Lindsay Ann Watt, who appears to be Watt's daughter, updated her Facebook photo the day after her mother's death. condolences to all family and friends.... "Adz you touched so many hearts", a friend wrote.

"Addelaid you were an wonderful woman and loved immensely I just hope they find this f***er who did it. Lindsay our thoughts are with you".

"I am totally shocked, words can't express how devastated I am", another friend said.
