Vlaardingen ferry stowaways 'from Iraq and Kuwait', Romanian driver arrested

The driver of the lorry, a 39-year-old Romanian national, has been arrested and police are still trying to establish if he knew there were people in the lorry or where the journey started.

Taking to Twitter, Rotterdam region emergency services tweeted, "Onboard a ship it turned out that several people were found in a cooling container".

Mirjam Boers, a spokeswoman for Rotterdam police, told the broadcaster RTL that all migrants found on the ship were undergoing checks by emergency responders, but could not comment on the severity of their conditions.

Dogs searching for other migrants were still on the ship.

In October, 39 bodies were found, all believed to be Vietnamese migrants, were discovered in the back of a refrigerated truck near London.

Mauricio Pochettino fired as Tottenham coach
He has won honours at every club he has coached. "We have to try to work hard and I think there will be a (new) manager quickly". Champions League aside, Spurs have been in decline for some time.

Two of the 25 stowaways were given medical help when the ferry returned to Vlaardingen after they were discovered but have since been released from hospital. "Twenty-three people were transferred to a police location after a medical check-up".

The boat was a cargo ferry run by the DFDS Seaways line, which said that the migrants had come on board on a lorry trailer, De Telegraaf newspaper said. "Word from the ship is that no one died".

Their nationalities were not immediately known.

"I think people are so desperate that they keep trying, despite the tragic events in the United Kingdom not so long ago", Jetten told broadcaster NOS.
