Chief justice orders delay in House fight for Trump records

President Donald Trump suggested Monday he might be willing to offer written testimony in the House impeachment inquiry over whether he pressured Ukraine's president to investigate Joe Biden and his son while withholding aid to the country. Mueller also wrote in his final report that he considered some of Trump's answers to be incomplete or imprecise.

"Without reviewing the requested return materials, the committee can not ensure that the IRS's audit process is functioning fairly and effectively, understand how provisions of the tax code are implicated by President Trump's returns, or exercise its legislative judgment to determine whether changes to the code may be warranted", it added. The committee's investigation entails, among other subjects, whether the President had undisclosed conflicts of interest.

"There is evidence, very sadly, that the president might have provided untruthful answers", Letter also said, according to the report.

The House hasn't been able to learn what Manafort told the grand jury, which Mueller apparently described in his report. In the Mueller report, grand jury details are redacted related to a sentence describing Manafort speaking with Trump after WikiLeaks' first release, in July 2016.

Morrison said Sondland and Trump had spoken approximately five times between July 15 and September 11 - the weeks that $391 million in USA assistance was withheld from Ukraine before it was released. There is precedent, including in the Nixon Watergate scandal, permitting the House to get grand jury information for impeachment proceedings.

Rogers questioned the Justice Department attorney Mark Freeman in court harshly, at times even openly arguing with points he made.

The order issued by Chief Justice John Roberts does not indicate whether the court ultimately plans to hear Trump's appeal, filed on Friday, of the ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Two cases concerning his financial documents are now before the Supreme Court and all eyes are on the justices - particularly Trump's two nominees to see whether they will see the issues presented differently than the majority of the lower courts that have delivered resounding losses to the President.

The panel of judges said Monday night that it would keep the House from seeing the grand jury materials "pending further order of the court".

While that date nears, Trump's willingness to give written answers to investigators - and what he submitted to Mueller in 2018 - may become more important in the impeachment probe.

But Mueller found many of Trump's answers in the Russian Federation probe less than satisfying.

Trump turned to the justices after the D.C. Circuit decided last week that it would not revisit its October decision backing the House Oversight Committee's authority to subpoena the records from Mazars LLP, Trump's longtime accounting firm.
