Scientists Need 10,000 Dog Volunteers For Very Important Research

"So we absolutely believe that, in that respect, pet dogs are going to be superior to laboratory models for understanding the aging process in humans, because we're able to capture that environmental diversity".

The scientists, which incorporate groups from the University of Washington School of Medicine and the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, are being financed by the National Institute of Aging, a division the National Institutes of Health. They say what we learn about how dogs age could lead to advances for human health.

Dr Daniel Promislow, pictured, says that if they find a genetic marker for a type of cancer in dogs that could be explored in humans.

Dogs in the study will live at home and follow their usual routines.

The five-year study was formally launched Thursday at a science meeting in Austin, Texas. It will create a national community of dogs, owners, veterinarians, researchers, and volunteers, all working together to advance knowledge about how genes, habits, and the environment influence dog aging.

On this we can all agree: The lifespan of a dog is far too short.

To nominate a pet, owners can visit the Dog Aging Project's website.

Information on the enrolled dogs will be gathered throughout their lives in an open-data platform, which means the data can be analyzed by scientists worldwide in a variety of ways. His family has three dogs: an 8-year-old German shepherd, a 14-year-old Keeshond and a mixed-breed rescue dog that Kaeberlein figures is 13 to 15 years old - which qualifies as senior-citizen status in dog years. 'Unfortunately, he ages much, much faster than I do'. "Just because we can, should we?"

Flames' T.J. Brodie taken to hospital after collapsing during practice
The team reported at night that after testing he was discharged and is doing well while recovering at home. The Chatham, Ont., native has appeared in all 21 games for the Flames this season, tallying eight assists.

Project co-director Dr. Kate Creevy is an associate professor of veterinary internal medicine at Texas A&M's College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.

About 500 middle-aged dogs will be part of a trial to assess the effects of rapamycin on cognition (mental skills), heart function, healthspan and lifespan.

One dogs one year is roughly equal to seven human years however that varies by breed.

The drug has extended lifespan in mice and a dinky safety gaze in canines chanced on no abominable side results.

Tests will measure each dog's changes in physical function as it gets older.

'Of us adore canines, ' talked about Dr Promislow, who on the total studies ageing in fruit flies.

Owners will gladly bear out surveys, ship records and submit a pup's poop for prognosis within the event that they think this can aid all canines are residing longer, even if it may perhaps perhaps probably now not aid their pet. "'No one has ever come up to me and said, 'Oh my goodness, I just love fruit flies".
